Most players do not realise the choice of bow can great affect technique and ease of execution. Weight: a finished violin bow normally weighs between 55 and 65 grams. A heavy bow will give more sound for less hand pressure but will tire the hand sooner. Lighter bows will be more sensitive and react quicker but may need more pressure to produce the same sound. Balance of the bow is important too. If the weight not distributed properly the stick gives the impression of almost misbehaving or pulling. The reaction or response of the stick is gauged by whether it responds quickly to the player's intention. A "spongy" stick (which can be caused by too much hair, a very elastic stick or a stick that has lost its camber) will require great pressure to gain volume. This greater pressure makes it in turn harder to control.
My own bows are made to order however there are normally samples to try out. Special requirements: weight, head type, lapping and frog details all have to be discussed. There is also a small selection of restored bows to be tried out.
